Birthdays

I start Tuesday with a good 65 kilometer road bicycle ride. AT one point, due to construction, there's a detour and I help out an asian lady rider negotiate where to go. And then I drag her back down the San Gabriel river trail until she exits. After a quick shower I'm on the motorcycle to return four books to the library and I get four new books. One of the books I get is "Red and Me" written by the former basketball player and rights activist who just passed away yesterday. I do the laundry and toss out old paperwork and work on the Long Beach Human Trafficking Task Force website before watching the election returns in the evening.

On Wednesday I decide to make a re-start at running after hurting my right hamstring nineteen days ago. I start by walking for a while and warming up and then gingerly running for thirty seconds at a time. The right hamstring feels okay, so I continue thie run/walk for 68 minutes with no difficulty. We'll see if there is any hamstring soreness or pain in the next day or so. At home I trim the roses, water the roses, and then mow the backyard. It's been a productive morning so I take a cooling shower and start working on a small Python tutorial for a friend who is using Python and dataframes for her bioinformatics class. I take a slow Wednesday, as is typical, before a busy Thursday.

Thursday starts with a cool mountain bicycle ride to the old yacht club and back to home. I run into a former co-worker who recently retired and we have a short discussion as we ride together and then (stationary) as our paths diverge. I grab a quick shower and tune into the Google machine learning Zoom call. It's not what I epxected but I learn a few things that might come in handy. Later I read the news and markets and relax before riding the motorcycle down to visit th acupuncturist. I think I'll take a break now and see if the neck stays reasonably healthy or degrades.

Friday is the first day resting the legs in a week and I start the day with a trip to the ATM and some grocery shopping. At home I wash the motorcycle and later in the day I wax it. When I'm down on my hands and knees waxing the lower part of the fairing I see a jagged six inch by two inch piece missing from the left side. I don't remember any cracks in the fairing from before, so I must have hit something since the last time that I waxed the Yamaha YZF-R1. I work the abdominals and lower back and trim the roses and cool down with a shower. And then grab lunch while watching FP2 for MotoGP and Moto2 from England. Later I'm supposed to help a friend out with sime Python programming for her bioninformatics class, but she postpones it until Saturday afternoon. The rest of the day is fairly slow as I work on some Python programming and clean up my Medicare folder (which has many updates of updates of updates as to how much money they will take from my social security check).

Saturday starts with an eghty kilometer road bicycle ride. Towards the end of the ride my lower back hurts. Is this from the abdominal/lower back workout from yesterday or from today's ride? Nonetheless I finish okay and cool down with a shower. MoyoGP/2/3 qualifying from England is next on the agenda and there are surpises in the MotoGP class. Late in the afternoon I help a friend out with some Python programming for her bioinformatics class.

I start Sunday with a good mountain bicycle recovery ride to the old yach club and back to home. I feel strong throughout with no lower back discomfort. At home I trim the roses and get down on my hands and knees to wax the rims of the motorcycle. This is a dirty, knuckly-banging job, but the motorcycle looks great when I finish. A cooling shower gets me ready for the MotoGP race and its a close race, but not many overtaking battles. For the rest of the day I just relax and stay cool and watch the IndyCar race from Nashville - it's a hot day and I'm glad that I can turn on the air conditioning and keep the house cool.

We're having hotter than normal weather now and I take steps to stay cool. On Monday I run/walk early but feel my right hamstring "not quite right" and so I end up walking the last half of the hour - trying to keep the heartrate in the aerobic zone. At home I polish the windscreen of the Ymaha YZF-R1 and re-install it before cooling down with a shower. This is a slow day and I watch a wild and excessive over-taking Moto3 race from England and then finish off a Korean Heist series. On Tuesday, my actual birthday, I start with 65 kilometers on the road bicycle. This pairs up with the recent 65 mile ride to celebrate my 65th birthday. After the ride I cool down with a shower and buy some "birthday party supplies". Later I watch a fun Moto2 race from England and then just let the party supplies kick in and stay cool with the new air conditioner.

On Wednesday and Thursday I get in a long run/walk and a shorter mountain bicyle ride. During Wednesday's long run/walk, I feel no discomfort or indications in the right hamstring and finish strong. Later on Wednesday, after the indepndent AC inspectors visit and a Long Beach Human Trafficking Task Force meeting, I work on the LBHTTF website and make super progress. And later, after dealing with some machine learning questions from friends, I just relax during these hot days. On Thursday, after the bicycle ride, I just answer emails and relax with some Netflix and other television shows. There are no pressing issues to finish. (Except one last vital step for the LBHTTF website that I can get to shortly since I'm not holding the effort up.)

Friday is a day off working the legs - one cannot cycle and run/walk everyday without an intermittent rest day here or there. I sleep an extra 25 minutes and then trim the roses and spray the junipers for spider mites. Inside the house I work to get the automailer working for the Long Beach Human Trafficking Task Force website. I cannot get it to work entirely in Python, but I mix Python with a small Perl routine to get it to work. Now I'm just waiting for content and picture updates from the LBTTTF core team. At late morning I get in an abdominal, lower back, and core workout and then cool down with a shower. The rest of the day is just spent cleaning up computer files and performing maintenance on the computer. As well as a bit of Netflix.

I start Saturday north on the Los Angeles river trail and feel strong. Near the El Monte airport I ride with a group of riders and we talk about families and F1 and the weather and miscellaneous things. Until our paths diverge. I ride across Arrow highway and stop for a gel at the top of the San Gabriel river trail. During the short break I start talking with another rider on break and keep teasing each other and I finally tell him how to get hold of me on facebook. And then I continue south on the San Gabriel river trail and back to home for 56 miles. After this ride I have trouble getting blod sugar back tothe brain and I keep feeling light-headed for a while. A shower helps and then I do some grocery shopping and continue trying to upgrade all of my Python packages. At one point I uninstall Anaconda, download and install the latest version, and open the application. It immediately tells me "There is a newer version of ANaconda available. Do you want to upgrade now?" What? I just downloaded the newest version. Nonetheless I keep going and I'll find out on Sunday that I needed to upgrade Anaconda again to get the geospatial module to import correctly. What a mess!

I start Sunday with a mountain bicycle ride to the old yacht club and back to home. I'm out early enough so that I miss the start of a half marathon taking place and all of the runners running inappropriately on the cycling trail (instead of the designated parallel running trail). At home I take an easy day to stay cool and finally get all of my Python packages updated on my desktop computer. SHould I go through this big effort now on my laptop or leave it slightly out-of-date?

On Monday I stay in bed an extra ten minutes and think that I will just walk this morning. But I get out the door and get warmed up and start the run/walk sequence. Nothing hurts and the legsa re not tired, but just to be sure, I cut the run/walk back to sixty minutes (rather than seventy). After a shower I start upgrading Python/Anaconda/Spyder on the laptop. I get almost completely finished with (almost) everything working well, when all of a sudden neither Ananconda nor Spyder will start up. I'm frustrated because I mirrored everything that I did not the desktop but the laptop wants to use different versions of the various packages. Thus I go back and uninstall everything again to start the upgrade over. I'll just take my time and slowly push this over the finish line. Today I'm fairly bored and in between babysitting the installations, I just relax with television and Netflix.
