Labor Day Weekend

I start Tuesday on the mountain bicycle rather than the road bicycle and go out Del Amo and then north on the San Gabriel river trail to a convenient turn-around point. And then I ride on back home. It's a bit shorter than usual, but only by about ten minutes. I prepare the motorcycle for a ride and vacuum the carpeting and get a shower. I fill up the Yamaha YZF-R1 with gasoline and take it for a ride. Since CSULA is starting school this week and there will be in-person learning, the motorcycle may start getting weekly trips up to CSULA. Late in the afternoon there is supposed to be a phone call from a sponsor of my CSULA project, but the sponsor doesn't call.

Wednesday through Friday are decent days with walks/runs, bicycle rides, and weight lifting in the mornings and working on CSULA stuff in the afternoons and/or watching Netflix. The CSULA stuff is ready to go now we just need to have the big kickoff meeting and meet our students.

On Saturday morning I do not know what happens, but I do not go cycling. THis is the first Saturday since 20 March - almost six months ago - that I have not ridden the bicycle on a Saturday. INstead I go out walking/running for 80 minutes where I'm running a bit more of the time. I run some errands and relax and tidy up the house and watch wet F1 qualifying from Spa Belgium and dry MotoGP/2/3 qualifying from SIlverstone, England. And the day disappears from there with a little bit of work on the CSULA project.

I get out the door on Sunday on the mountain bicycle for a ride to the old yacht club and back home. I feel strong throughout. At home I trim the roses, trim the sidebushes, and trim a bush on the front yard before getting a shower. The F1 race from Sap, Belgium is held during a torrential downpour and it is shortened to a trivial distance to meet contractual and sponsorship obligations. Though required for safety concerns, it's a disappointment to the fans in attendance and the global fans watching on television. Sunday also disappears as I save the MotoGP race for Monday and will just push back the Moto3 and Moto2 races throughout the week to extend my excitement and enthusiasm.

I start Monday banging away on CSULA stuff. Just after noon I get out and have a good session lifting weights. These are still light weight, high repetition workouts, but they are getting better. After a shower I watch a good MotoGP race from Silverstone England though my favorite rider fades badly in the last half of the race to claim 8th place. I continue to bang away on CSULA stuff throughout the day and notice that the television only was turned on for the stream of the MotoGP race.

On Monday night into Tuesday morning it seems like I have a lot of vivid dreams though the sleep does not feel good. Later when I check my FitBit for sleep I see that I am within bounds for REM sleep, deep sleep, and awake time. Though maybe the total duration of sleep was low. Nonetheless I am ready to go cycling at 6:10 am when there are drops of rain. I go hide the bicycle in the garage and try to determine what will happen to the rain. When it appears to lighten up, I get out and have a good 65 kilometer ride where I ride through various patches where the pavement is bone dry and damp. Nonetheless, it feels good to ride! After a quick shower I pick up supplies at the grocery store and work on debugging a CSULA routine that I've written just to help push the students along when they are up to speed. The routine works well but I have a question on a single plus or minus sign - but I'll let that stay to be resolved and I comment my code to note this. I also do a bit of maintenance on the motorcycle which includes topping up the battery and topping up the tire pressures. The rear tire has to be topped up twice a week since there is a slow leak (and I really should buy two new tires or call it quits, abandon this motorcycle with 104,000 miles on it, and buy a new motorcycle). Later in the day I watch the Moto3 race from SIlverstone England and am again somewhat disappointed as my favorite Moto3 rider finished well down in the pack but still increases his championship lead.

I'm out the door before 6:30 am for an 80 minute walk/run. I slowly try to increase the portion of running these days and I try to concentrate on my foot strike so that I don't fall again. I take a bit of time to relax, but then go trim, edge, and mow the front lawn. The backyard doesn't really need mowing and I kinda like a wilder backyard anyway. And then I trim the roses and call it quits. After a shower I pick up supplies at the grocery store and read the news and markets. The Moto2 race from Silverstone England is a bit disappointing as my favorite rider falls and loses his recent momentum. I set up meetings with CSULA students and let them know that we can talk or Zoom meet when they want/need to before the formal introduction meeting. Today my legs are tired from the increased running so I keep trying to stretch them out throughout the day.

Thursday starts with a mountain bicycle ride out Del Amo and up the San Gabriel river trail. I see the cross country runners again so today I stop and chat with them. It turns out they are from Saint John Bosco high school and we share a few running stories and I wish them luck in their race this weekend out at Mount San Antonio college. I've seen them running four times in the last couple of weeks so I decided to find out who they are. Back at home I grab a shower and the day disappears without anything significant.

I start Friday slowly, as is usual, and catch up on the news and markets and update the Long Beach crime statistics data and let the Python crime prediction routine run for the day. At mid morning I get in a decent session with the weights and trim the roses and then just kinda do some brainstorming looking for good ideas to pursue (in addition to the new school year project at CSULA). For the first time in many years, I watch a tennis match from the US Open featuring an 18 year old unseeded Spanish player and the number 3 in the world who has recently pissed people off with his "advantageous" bathroom breaks and injury breaks. I'm cheering the 18 year old kid who just plays out of his head to take two of the first three sets. But this is as much tennis as I can watch and go do other things. Later I'm happy when I see that the 18 year old Spanish kid has won in 5th set tiebreak.

I start Saturday with a good road bicycle ride. At various times riders go past me and I let them get ahead for a while and then I speed up and chase them down. Maybe I should I find the motivation to go faster on my own in the first place. After a shower I drive to return books to the library and realize that the library is closed for Labor Day. So I can drop off the return books but cannot pick up the books on hold. I stop in at the grocery store for supplies and have a quiet afternoon watching golf and more tennis. F1 qualifying is from Zandvoort, Netherlands - a track that has not been used for F1 since 1985. I'm looking forward to the return to Zandvoort, but the track is very short and twisty and undulating and will not allow much overtaking during the race. Nonetheless its good to see the qualifying. Today is a very hot day to so I keep the house buttoned up (for the most part) to keep the coolness in and the hot weather out. Until after 5 pm when I open up doors and let a breeze come through to keep the house at a comfortable temperature without the use of the AC.

Sunday is going to be a hot day with a high temperature in Long Beach near or above 90F. I get out on the mountain bicycle for the typical Sunday ride to the old yacht club and back towards home. I don't see some of the usual running groups today - maybe because they didn't have their organized ride for Labor day weekend. After a shower I watch a fairly processional Dutch F1 race from Zandvoort as I had expected. And I just have a slow day since its hot outside (and cooler inside with the AC running).

Monday is a slow day since my legs are tired from good Saturday and Sunday bicycle rides. I walk to the grocery store for supplies, decide to cleanup all of my email inboxes, re-organize my desktop bookmarks, and go back to the Python simulation I was working on before. Today I find the inaccuracy that had been bugging me before and I fix it and have a good solid simulation, optimization, and Monte Carlo analysis put together in a clean package. At late morning I get in a core workout for the abdominals and lower back - its the best I'm going to do today.
