Birthday and Beyond

My body is willing, but my mind is not on Tuesday morning. Thus instead of cycling I go walking for an hour. Back at home, with a decent sweat worked up, I trim the roses and then start painting some of the small areas in the library that cannot be reached by a regular roller but are too large to get with a brush. Finally I'm finished and I can get in a pure roller paiint job on Thursday or Friday with no delays. I cool off with a shower and check the news and the markets. I take the opportunity to download and update a newer financial status app that I can just look at each day and not worry about updating for a few weeks at a time. Eventually I get bored and start cooking a second round of spicy Thai yellow curry - I may not eat it today, but it will be ready for the upcoming days. When I'm confident in my ability to reproduce the great curry dishes, then I'll try a falafel and an aloo gobi.

I start Wedneday with a great road bicycle ride where I feel strong throughout. THe over-distance ride from Saturday really helping my cycling. I have a slow late morning and then drive down to see my dentist. There's a white spot on my gums we've been watching for two years and we decide to do some deep digging and see if we can find a root cause. So I get a local anesthetic but there is still pain as she is digging around - it's okay because we both want to find out what is going on. Eventually I'm out of the dentist's chair after two hours or so. The dentist wants to only charge me for a cleaning but I insist that I should pay her more and we decide on a reasonable price. I drive on home and just watch ice hockey and Netflix and other things since I want to take it easy after the digging.

I get out for a recovery bicycle ride on Thursday morning down to the end of the ocean trail and back home. I trim the roses and get cleaned up and do some grocery shopping. After an hour break to read the news and check the markets, I start painting the library. Today I make a number of mistakes and have to pull out the damp rag to wipe away the mistakes, but I eventually get into a good groove and finish. I clean up the painting supplies and rise off with a cooling shower. I manage to catch the last half of the Long Beach Human Trafficking Task Force online meeting and then I relax with golf and ice hockey and Netflix and spicy Thai curry. Late in the afternoon I get a phone call from a third party that needs help with securing the website and data of a political party - they want my knowledge of cryptography and encryption. So I agree to talk with them on an upcoming Zoom call scheduled for this weekend.

Friday and Saturday are blah days. I get in a walk on Friday morning and put the library back together after the new paint. I also mow the lawn and clean up the roses and sideyard. After a shower I run some errands including another trip to Home Depot for a darker shade of blue for my bedroom. And from there I'm just lazy for the rest of the day. I skip the Saturday morning bicycle ride and instead just sleep for another hour. AT mid morning I get in a good sesson with the weights where I add in another set for each exercise. After a shower watch Formula One qualifying from England, some ice hockey, some golf, MotoGP qualifying from the Czech Republic, and do some reading.

I start Sunday with a good road bicycle ride. Recently I did my annual birthday ride of 63 miles (for 63 years old) but today, on my actual birthday, I ride 63 kilometers. Back at home I cut and pound new staking for the carnations and I tie them up so that they will grow more upright. After a shower I watch the Formula One race with a few surprises throughout the field. After a break and small ittle things around the house, I watch the MotoGP race from the Czech Republic with a total shock podium and surprising results throughout the field. And later I work on some voter district mapping that I want to debug.

On Monday morning I turn over and go back to sleep for an extra hour. When I wake up I trim the roses, finally find the indexing error in the voting district mapping routines, and start painting my bedroom. At first I try painting without tape, as I've done for the last two rooms. But it isn't working, so I lay down the tape near the crown moulding and door frames and window frames. And this isn't generating clean lines near the crown moulding. What's going on here? I keep pushing forward knowing that there will be a fair amount of touch-up when I finish the room. I finish half the room and quit - maybe things will go better on another day. Afer a cooling shower I grab lunch and watch a very close and strategic Czech Republic Moto3 race. I don't have any serious favorites to cheer for in Moto3 this year, but the racing is still fun. Late in the afternoon I have a great session with the weights and cool down with another quick rinse.

I sleep horribly into Tuesday. Finally, after not being able to sleep, I get up a bit after 5 am and go walking. I walk in the middle of the streets in order to avoid unseen sidewalk uneveness that I might trip on. I quit after walking for 75 minutes. I grab a shower and do the grocery shopping for the week a few days early. After checking the markets and the news, I cook more spicy Thai curry for future days and then get to the library to return five books that I've read and to pick up three new ones. A fun Moto2 race from the Czech Republic starts the afternoon though my favorite rider loses in world championship points lead. Late in the day I've got all of the tools to write a report for the Long Beach city council candidate. But I just need a bit more data and maps that I'll get on Wednesday.

I sleep well on TUesday night into Wednesday with the night being chilly - down to 59F in August. I get in a good road bicycle ride of 60 kilometers where I feel strong throughout. Back at home I trim the sidebush from the neighbors that threatens my Internet cable and then trim the roses. For the rest of the day, a day before we are supposed to start a serious hot weather spell for almost a week, I just relax and watch ice hockey playoffs. I guess I'm hoping that my memories of playing ice hockey in the cold winter and cold ice rinks will keep me cool for the upcoming heat spell. Later in the day I finish up the voting strategy for city council candidate and I'll read it over once more on Thursday morning before sending it off to her.

I get in a good road bicycle loop ride of about 50 kilometers on Thursday morning. After a shower I run some errands and spend the day getting the voting district report into the hand of the city council candidate, watching some Netflix, and just being a bit lazy.

Friday is a planned day off from cycling and I go walking for 70 minutes in the morning. I follow that up with trimming the roses and giving both the roses and carnations a good shot of water since the next few days are expected to be very hot. After a shower I work on the voting results and targets for my own city council district just out of curiosity. (My city council district only had three contenders in the primary whereas the other district had six contenders.) Just before noon I start painting my bedroom again and this time I use a new paint brush and am able to paint nice sharp lines without the benefit of (except one small section since I don't have easy access. Though the paint brush that I used on Monday is a high quality paint brush, maybe it was too old for sharp lines. I also give my inputs on assignments for CSULA senior design projects - which will all be remote this year unless we can miraculously open the campus to students in 2021.

Saturday is going to be hot in Long Beach - approaching 95F. I get out for a good road bicycle ride early in the morning. I end up at 60 kilometers and my fitbit, whether you can believe it or not, showed I was in the red zone for fully half of the ride. Between the ride and heat - no wonder I'm lazy for the rest of the day. There's qualifying for the Spanish F1 race as well as wild qualifying for MotoGP from Austria. MotoGP is completely unpredictable this year.

Sunday is also going to be hot and I'm physically hungover from yesterday's ride and heat, but I get in a recovery mountain bicycle ride to the end of the ocean trail and back. When I get home I notice that my fitbit band has broken again, so I pull out the super glue and glue it again. I wonder how many "breaks and glue fixes" the band will take. The Formula One race is somewhat boring. After the race I paint half of my bedroom with the new, darker blue color and when it dries, i like it! After another cooling shower I watch a wild and exciting MotoGP race where a nasty acccident and near-miss with tumbling bikes causes a red flag and restart. My favorite rider loses the front end and crashes just after he took the lead. The rest of the day is spent relaxing and staying cool.

On Monday morning I think about riding a bicycle for the third day in a row. But then I put on my walking/unning shoes and get out for 65 minutes. Today is going to be another hot day, so I water the roses and carnations in advance. After a shower and catching up on the markets and news, I get motivated and move furniture around in my bedroom and paint behind the bed and some other trim. I'll be sleeping in my bed amongst a mess of disarranged furniture and objects, but the painting should be done in two more sessions. I take another shower to cool down and watch a very close Moto3 race and decide that I'll be cheering for Deniz Oncu in Moto3 from now on. He leads for a lot of the race and gets bumped and shuffled down to seventh at the end - but still a fine showing. And then I relax with Netflix and some ice hockey and just staying cool.
