Labor Day Weekend

I sleep about 15 minutes late on Tuesday and get out for a decent 45 minute run/walk. I just don't have the enthusiasm for anything longer today. After a shower I check the news and the markets and then go run errands. Back at home I work on some graphing utilities and then relax during the hottest part of the day. Near 6 pm I'm double booked with a human trafficking meeting and a crime meeting with the police and city councilpeople, so I ride the bicycle to the crime meeting (specifically since I've done so much work on the Long Beach crime statitsics and demograhics of crime). There are a number city councilpeople present and I tag onto Councilwoman Price who has requested the homeless service provision app (and who I sent an email to on Friday). She remembers my emails and says that she will forward it to the city manager for consideration. In general, the meeting goes well with the fire and police personnel explaining the situation with their services and, of course, a number of audience members carrying the "crime is our of control" subject despite all data showing that crime is down in Long Beach.

Wednesday rings in a bit cooler ith a fairly heavy marine layer. I get in a good 40 mile road bicycle ride and trim the roses and cool off with a cool shower. Today looks to be cooler with some cloud cover to prevent the sun from baking us in and some nice breezes. It is a welcome relief from the last few days of very hot days. Late in the afternoon I get out and mow the lawn and trim some tree branches that are hanging down. Though it is a cooler day, it still takes a lot out of me. I take another cooling shower and relax for the evening.

I stay in bed an extra 20 minutes and get on the mountain bicycle to ride. I ride past the pier and make the turn around to come home - the legs and mind are both worn out righ now. Near the aquarium I stop and talk with a gentleman named Eric who has a degree in geography and is hoping to do a maritime internship and then return to hs home country and pursue this field back there. I give him my contact information because I might have people at LBCC or the Port of Long Beach who can help him out. I get in a cooling shower and run a quick errand and find out, of course, that the 11:30 telecon is cancelled at the last minute. It couldn't have been cancelled an hour ago so that I could run more errands in a single shot? I spend the afternoon relaxing since today is hot and humid. I push around ome ideas and code a bit, but don't make any serious progress. I also realize that today is the 28th anniversary of my Mom's death and think about me being the last living Manning. Today is a hot and humid day, but I wash the hardwood floors and go for a slow bicycle ride to the library to pick up a book that they are holding for me. By the end of the day 'm already 60 pages into the book.

I sart Friday with a humid run/walk of 50 minutes. A cooling shower gets me ready to put stuff together for today's CSULA kickoff meeting where I'll meet my team for the academic year. Actually this year, since I'll be away a lot, I've requested to just participate half time because it wouldn't be fair to the students for me to be missing half the metings. So another volunteer will be the team's official advisor. AFter the meeting I rush on home and relax and catch up on the Breaking Bad series and do more reading.

Saturday starts with a good 40 mile road bicycle ride. AFter a cooling shower I run some errands and meet up with Ruby for lunch. We again have a 3.5 hour lunch talking about our lives and things and busienss opportunities. On the way home I stop in at MoneyGram and send some money off to a friend and finally watch a sunny F1 qualifying session from Spa, Belgium. Someday I'll make it there. The rest of the day is spent updating websites for the turn over of the new month and cleaning up the carnations.

After a night of both deep sleep and good REM sleep, I take the mountain bicycle out for about a two hour ride. Back at home I trim the roses and de-weed the carnations before a cooling shower and a good Belgian Grand Prix. The afternoon is a bit slow since it's a hot day, but near 5 pm I pick up some supplies and drive down to Bolsa Chica beach to meet up with a second cousin who I have not seen in 45 years and two third cousins. One third cousin has reserved a fire pit and we play beach bacce ball and talk and eat. The entire set of cousins and their wives are really cool and my fourth cousin Alexander, who is two years old, is fun to play with and very cute (being half white and half Vietnamese). It's a fun evening and we hope to do it again soon by Christmas at the latest when everyone should be back in the area.

On Monday my legs are hungover from the two consecutive days of riding and the night of walking and standing on the beach. I walk to the store for supplies and work on some homeless tempate enhancements. Near noon I get in a decent workout with the weights and don't even have a hint of shoulder pain. Though I do ice the shoulders afterwards as a precaution. After a cooling shower and lunch I work on some zipcode demographics during the hottest part of the day.

On Tuesday I am lazy and do some early morning work and then lift weights - this being the first time in a very long time that I've lifted weights on two consecutive days. But since I'm taking my time increasing the weights, there is are no problems with the shoulders. I start drinking at late morning and wacth an episode of Breaking Bad and work on some demographics and generally have a slow day since it is so hot.

Wednesday is a day for repentance of the sins of Tuesday, so I get out on the mountain bicycle for a two hour ride. Today is also very hot, but the humidity has dropped quite a bit and it is still comfortable in the house without air conditioning at 1:30 in the afternoon. But I still gather my effects and head to a coffeeshop to work in their blasting air conditioning. I manage to scrape all of the assets of a website that I like the look and feel of and get it running independently on my server (for future use when somebody wants a new website).

On Thursday I stay in bed an extra twenty minutes and then get out for a 45 minute run/walk. It's all that I have today. The heat just seems to take a lot out of me when it goes on for days at a time. After the run I start in on a final reformatting of the child abuse application because it seems as though it is gaining traction and we might get funding for it soon. I get to the Long beach Human Trafficking Task Force meeting and then finish up this go-round of reformatting the child abuse application. There is still work to be done, but at least it's semi-readable, intuitive, and nice looking.

I start Friday with a motorcycle ride to Torrance to meet with Ruby and a medical doctor/geek to talk about business opportunities. It turns out that he had interactions with our principal many years ago and got nowhere, so he decided to drop it. This is discouraging, but it finally convinces Ruby that we need to drop the principal and just try to do it ourselves. After the two hour meeting I ride up to CSULA and meet with my team and their real advisor. It's a good meeting. I have a good ride home and lift weights. Since it is so hot, the sweat is just pouring off of me during the session. Afterwards I water the roses and de-weed around the roses since I'm all hot and sweaty anyway. A cooling shower feels good and I finally relax with Breaking Bad and another documentary. And then I go attend to CSULA and child abuse application matters. I send Ruby an email that has all of the tasks that we have to accomplish if we are going to launch this effort (with or) without the previous experts on our side.

I start Saturday with a decent 65 kilometer road bicycle ride. I feel strong at times and slow at other times. After a cooling shower I pick up supplies at the grocery store and watch an anti-climactic F1 qualifying from Monza, Italy where everyone lolligags around prior to the last run and don't even get to try and capture the pole. From there I do some CSULA work and relax on this hot Saturday.

Sunday starts with a decent road bicycle ride where I run into a former co-worker (who I see riding semi-regularly) and my Philippino runner friend. Both of them are doing well and its a good, but shorter ride, today for me. At home I wipe down the bicycle to make it look clean again, trim a sidebush, and cool down with a shower. The Formula One race from Monza, Italy is as anticlimactic as the messy final qualifying was. In the afternoon I relax and wacth a bit of football and work on the child abuse application. And late in the afternoon I trim tw front bushes that had become unwieldy.

I start Monday with a recovery mountain bicycle ride. On the way home but still along the beach trail I get a flat rear tire. I stop to change the inner tube and discover a thin wire that has poked through the tire and given me the flat. But I can't pull the wire out. Another person comes along and stops and offers up their key ring to grab the thin wire and pull it out. It works! So then I continue the conversation with the person with the key ring as I put the new tube in and inflate it with w CO2 cartridge. The guy has hear problems and Hepatitis C and he's asking me for advice. Really? I finally get out of there and ride home. Near noon I meet up with a former co-worker Wen-Chi in Seal Beach.
