Hot August

Tuesday starts with a decent one hour run/walk. Again the run portions dominate the effort, but I still keep throwing in some walking periods because I don't want to have Achilles tndon or calf problems. After a shower I go check my blood pressure at the medical center and it is slightly elevated as opposed to depressed. I tell the nurses that all's I did on Monday was eat, so that would cause the elevation. Nonetheless I have a telephone appointment scheduled with my primary care physician so that we can talk about things. Throughout the day I put my head down and work hard on the child trauma algorithms and website and make a lot of progress (using a Python backend instead of my old and familiar Perl backend). Near 6 pm I take off for a 6:30 meeting at Long Beach City College but stop off at the Long Beach Yamaha dealer to coerce them into letting me test ride a Yamaha R3 in advance of an all cash purchase. We agree to defer the test ride until next week. The meeting is semi-porudctive as we talk about the ways to hook and market the human trafficking event.

I get in a decent 40 mile road bicycle ride on Wednesday though my legs feel a bit "hungover" from Tuesday run/walk. Nonetheless its a good ride and I see my ne Philippino friend, Archie, running along and I shout out words of encouragement to him rather than interrupting his workout. After a cooling shower I work on action items from last night's human trafficking meeting and work on CSULA stuff in advance of the fall semester which is coming up quickly. After a god long break after 1pm for vegetables and bread and cheese I start working on a second human trafficking video (consisting of splicing together many different videos and special effects). I don't want to be a video editor, but nobody else can do it so I'm stuck with it. Later in the day I start to put together a website for the new academic year's senior design project so that the team has a point of focus to stat reading from.

I start Thursday with a recovery bicycle ride on the mountain bicycle and meet up with my third cousin again. We stop for a muffin and enjoy the conversation and note that my third cousin's father will be coming to visit near Labor Day. I have not seen my second cousin in 40 years. After a cooling shower and a few errands I have a teleconference related to child abuse and it's obvious that this is going nowhere. And then I have a phone appointment with my primary care physician and we talk about my recent blood tests and blood pressure tests and I'm told to hydrate more. I've never been good at stayig hydrated, so I'll put this on my list and work on it. In the afternoon I watch some television and then finish off the new academic year website for the CSULA team. Even though I'm expected to be absent for much of this coming academic year, I'm looking forward to CSULA meetings that I have coming up on the 19th and 30th to kick off the year. Late on Thursday I start working on an unsolicited proposal related to the child abuse effort in order to get the ball rolling (because that agency is clueless right now).

I go walking on Friday morning - my legs are tired from the running and cycling this week. After a shower I get to a draft version of the child abuse unsolicited proposal and cover letter and send it off to Ruby to let her check it out before we push it off to the agency. And then I finish up the CSULA website for the upcoming year.

Saturday starts as a cool day and I get in a 48 mile road bicycle ride. I have just a couple of miles coming down off the Whittier Narrows dam where I struggle a bit. Otherwise I feel strong throughout. During the ride above the Whitter Narrows dam I start thinking that I haven't seen this really old cyclist for a while. He always dresses all in black and is very slow on a hybrid bicycle, but at least he is always riding. As I stop for a fluid break at my turn around point, I see the old cyclist coming along. When he tries to make a sharp turn on some dirt - why was he doing that - he loses his balance and falls. So I go over and make him stay down for a few seconds to regain a mental calm and then help him up and pick up his bike. He insists that he is fine and he looks and behaves that way, but I keep asking him if he's okay and if he wants a drink. When I'm satisfied that he's okay, I start for home. The rest of the day is spent trying to add an additional layer of zipcodes to my demographic study and watching a few episodes of "Breaking Bad" (which I never atched when it was popular. Person C_Ch comes over and we have a nice visit before I send him on his way.

I'm lazy on Sunday morning. I stay in bed an extra hour and then go work on the demographics Python scripts as well as another look at the child abuse unsolicited proposal. Both are getting close to be ready for sendoff. Late in the afternoon I get in a workout with the weights and am still not having any shoulder pain.

I start Monday on the road bicycle and have to shorten my ride a couple of miles because of a road closure. After the ride I trim the roses and get a cooling shower. Near noon I gas up the Yamaha YZF-R1 and ride to CSULA for a preliminary kickoff meeting for the new semester for faculty and volunteers. After the meeting I rush on home to watch a couple more episodes of "Breaking Bad", read, and stay away from coding to give myself a creative break. I set up a FitBit that a friend has given me so that I can monitor my sleep and wear it on the Tuesday morning bicycle ride.

I have a normal night of sleep on Monday night - deep sleep and REM sleep for the first few hours, and then light sleep and REM sleep for the rest of the night. The FitBit shows the same thing. WTF? Really? I needed a FitBit to tell me what I already knew? Nonetheless I wear the FitBit on today's road bicycle ride which is shorteneded by a couple of miles from the road closure. The FitBit shows I rode a couple miles less than usual, shows me the map of where I've been, and had a heart rate that was incosnsistent and jumping all over the place. Really? I needed a FitBit to tell me where I rode? And to give me inconsistent heart rate readings? I'm pretty disappointed with this thing and I'm glad that I didn't pay for it. After a cooling shower I go get my blood drawn, refill a prescription, but lunch for later, and pick up a few supplies at the grocery store. I'm on the motorcycle again today, so I couldn't pick up that many supplies. At home I start laundry and send off the child abuse unsolicited proposal and cover letter for review. The rest of the day is fairly slow with some reading and taking care of the roses and other things.

I walk to the store on Wednesday to start a lazy day. At home I trim the roses and get news that my kidney tests are normal (after an abnormal set back in May). I spend the morning coding the logic for the trauma-based care website.

I cannot fall asleep on Wednesday night and end up turning the light bac on and reding for a while. When I wake up the FitBit 5.5 hours of sleep but at least most of it was spent in deep sleep or REM sleep. I get in 40 mile on the road bicycle during a windy ride that takes a fair amount out of me. I do some coding, some reading, and some watching television throughout the day. With the lack of sleep and windy ride, I'm pretty tired. Late in the afternoon I ride the motorcycle down to Irvine and Person C_Ch and I have dinner and hang out for a while before my late high speed ride home.

I sleep deep on Thursday night and start the day by trimming, feeding, and watering the roses and carnations and doing some other gardening. When I sit down to read the news, some opportunities come in for a Long Beach homeless shelter-provision app and a CSULA pre-kickoff clarification. Thus I put together the sales pitches and send them off. Near noon I get in a good workout with the weights and cool down with a shower and watch some telvision and do some reading. At mid afternoon I'm feeling a bit stale, so I go for a 42 minute walk and work up a good sweat in the mid-day heat. Another cooling shower gets me relaxed and I watch the news for a bit and then work on airplane flights for my trip as well as a different type of homeless shelter-provision template.

I get in a 48 mile road bicycle ride that isn't my best effort. I just seemed tired te whole way. After a shower I get to the library to return two books and get another one and then watch an exciting MotoGP qualifying from SIlverstone, England. Afterwards I finish up the new shelter-provision template and hope to hear from city officials about the effort. Late in the afternoon I go to a birthday couple for one of the couples that I usedto babysit for. It's a nice party with a number of people that I know and a number of people that I don't know. Nonetheless it is fun to get out and mingle and see what people are doing with their lives.

I start Sunday with a 60 kilometer road bicycle ride. It is again not my best effort as I seem to be tired for some of the ride but I have some good periods of the ride where I crank along nicely. I trim the roses and then take a cooling shower during the warming day. Laundry is started and I watch a super exciting MotoGP race from England. During the last two laps I am standing and jumping in the living room - wishing my favorite rider on. "Come on Alex! Come on Alex!" I'm sure the neighbors can here me yelling, but I don't care. Alex Rins, the Suzuki factory rider, who I've followed for 6 years during his career up the ladder, manages an almost impossible pass on the last corner of the last lap to win the race. Now I'm sure the neighbors can hear my yelling and screaming but they can't see the tears of joy that I have for the win. It takes me some time to come down from the race win, but I start in on some coding for the alternative homeless template before I take a break later in the afternoon to finally eat lunch. The rest of the day is fairly slow since I'm tired.

I'm hungover from Saturday and Sunday bicycle rides so the day starts slowly. The FtBit continue to indicate that I am getting more deep sleep (to heal the body) and more REM sleep (to heal the mind) than peers of my age group. This is good! Surprisingly I make some good progress on the homeless template and except for some small details that would be a customer choice, it's as far as I can go for now. At mid morning I get out and lift weights, water the roses, and then clean the kitchen floor. A cool shower gets me ready for the Moto3 race from England. I don't have a horse in this race, but it's still a fun race. In the afternoon I do some reading and watch television a bit untl Person C_Ch comes to visit later. We have a nice visit and I sedn him on his way to get some sleep.
