Japan, Day 5

Fumi has reserved a badminton court for us so Karl, Kikumi, Toshi-san, Marriko, and I spend the next 90 minutes trading partners and having fun. Fumi is a very good player but Karl and I catch up fast from our tennis experience. Karl occasionally still plays tennis so he does quite well. It takes me longer to catch up because I haven't picked up a tennis racket in 10 years. But the experience makes me want to see if there are places to play badminton near Long Beach.

Afterwards we go to another hot springs bath/sauna place. The 90 minutes of badminton/hot baths/saunas wear us out quite nicely. Even if I had to deny the conversation and advances of some guy who was visiting from Okinawa.

At the hot springs bath/sauna location there is a dinner and a show that we watch. The show features men and women dressed in traditional Japanese dress as men and women and women and men. When any man comes out dressed as a woman Toshi-san grabs me by the arm and says, "Man". I smile back and nod my head and say, "I know". There is one man or woman, I don't know, who comes over near our table each time that he/she performs. The group says that he/she is interested in me. Great! Now what have I done? At the conclusion of the show it is expected that each guest thank the dancers. We get in the line and I, as politely as possible, thank the dancers and get the heck out of there!

Later we have a nice tempura dinner where I keep staring at the waiter as he keeps smiling back and giggling. The entire group has an argument over who is paying for dinner as we each run to the cashier and try to pay. This prevents me from inviting the waiter "to experience my western hospitality". Another lost opportunity.
